Ferdie finds a nice warm home.

(Ferdie was a Humane Society rescue fostered by Jackie Harrelson)

Hi Momma Jackie! I'm learning to email this weekend. Momma Beth thinks if I learn to email maybe I will quit chewing her laptop cord. She says she is subject to ridicule at work because her dog ate her laptop cord not once but TWICE! Its pretty nice here. I have a big yard to run in. I have plenty of Dog food and I usually get a chance to get a little cat food when Mom lets me in the house. She lets me sleep in the house when its cold outside but I have a bed and blankets in the garage too. I miss my brothers and sisters though, those snootty cats aren't much fun, they don't like to play and they are really crabby about sharing their toys. Mom is taking me to have my picture taken with Santa. Mom says if I'm good and don't chew Santa's beard off I might get something good for Christmas. I'm going to ask for a friend to live here. I have friends who live on the next street over but I only get to see them when Mom takes me for a walk and we don't stay there nearly long enough. I'm going to do my best to leave Santa's beard alone! I'm really big now. I had to go to the vet's for a shot last week (I was brave) and I weighed more than 18 pounds. I have learned lots of stuff too. I finally learned to climb the stairs last weekend. Thats important because I can follow the cats when they run away to play. I run after them because I want to play too but they just turn around and hiss at me. I can sympathize with that guy Rudolph who never gets to play any reindeer games, I never get to play any kitty cat games. I can fetch and if I sit like a good puppy Mom usually gives me a treat. Last weekend my Grandma and Grandpa came to visit. Grandpa really likes the blackfaced cat, he kept saying it looks just like his kitty but Grandma really liked me. Grandma said I can come visit at their house for Christmas. I hope Santa knows where I am so he can bring me my friend. Momma Jackie, if Santa stops by there to find me a friend will you pick out somebody nice who will play with me? I promise to share all my toys. I'll write again soon.
Love Ferdie PS Say Hi! to Dad too!

Nitro is living it up!

I cannot express what joy Nitro has given to our family. He is an absolutely wonderful dog with an enormous heart and an obvious lust for living. Your hard work and dedication are apparent through him. I am so glad you took a chance on him the day you took him to Bark in the Park; God knew what He was doing when He put Nitro in my path. He is having a fantastic time playing with my family and me. I must commend you on how extremely well behaved he is; we are so impressed at the number of commands he knows and how well he listens and interacts with my young son and our other dog. I could go on and on about how grateful we are to have him in our lives, so if you would please pass the word to the other volunteers at the Humane Society, I would appreciate it immensely. All of you took such good care of him, and I cannot thank you all enough. Please feel free to check up on him anytime.

Thank you again,
Amanda Brooks

Hannah's home!

Thank you all for doing a wonderful job taking care of our animals.

I have a success story I would like to share with you as a result of your summer drive to find homes for older dogs, which had been at the Shelter for a long time.

My husband and I decided we had room for another member in our family unit. We already had a stray "hound dog", which is about ten years old, and the Alpha dog.

I asked Sue which dog had been in the Shelter the longest. Without hesitation, she said "Jordan", and took me to a cage where a big black dog began wagging her tail so furiously, it involved her whole body. It was love at first sight.

I took her home. At first, she and Zorro had a few altercations before he established himself as the "Top Dog". Now, they tolerate one another.

She is a wonderful addition to our family because she isn't a puppy and doesn't chew our shoes or any of the damaging things so common to puppies. After one accident, she was house broken. We’re happy she quickly got past that stage.

We changed her name to Hannah. She has not stopped wagging her tail since she came home, wakes up and goes to sleep with her tail thumping something.

Since bringing Hannah home, I've been ill and she’s been watchful and concerned about me. When I'm in bed, she lies on the floor right next to me and surprises me when I feel a cold nose touching my hand.

She tries to speak to us, making little noises, then gets worked up and begins barking. I fully expect her to, one day, actually say: "Thank you."

Baxter's all set...

Baxter has come so far. He has learned to play with Benny, Katie and Hunter. He doesn't tear up all of his toys anymore and he hardly even growls at the kids. We love him so much. He is still really protective, and that is nice. I don't have to worry about the kids outside or down at the lake, Baxter will bite off someone's leg if they try to hurt them or kidnap them! We went camping over the break and Baxter absolutely loved it. He loves to ride on the four-wheeler and take walks. He even loves to play with Hunters puppy. He has really turned out to be such a joy and lots of fun.

Have a great day. And thank you for giving us the chance to love Baxter!

Old dog - New tricks!

I MADE THE MISTAKE OF GOING TO PETCO TO GET TAG, MY WALKER, A TOY. THERE WAS A BIG BLACK DOG IN A CAGE – I HAD TO STOP AND TALK TO HIM - WHAT SAD EYES, BUT THE TAIL DID WAG A LITTLE. THIS WAS ON A SATURDAY. ON MONDAY, I CALLED THE HUMANE SOCIETY AND SAID I WANTED TO ADD HIM TO MY HOME. LATER THAT DAY, MARY DID BRING HIM TO ME - THIS WAS JUNE 6, 2006. WHAT A GREAT TIME WE HAVE HAD! NOW THE EYES DO SHINE AND TAIL GOES MOST OF THE TIME. ALEX IS 7 YEARS OLD, 75 POUNDS, ALL OF WHICH IS FULL OF LOVE. I CANT BELIEVE HE HAD BEEN AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY FOR THREE YEARS. THEY MUST TAKE GOOD CARE OF THEM, AS HIS SPIRIT WAS NOT BROKEN. PLEASE, IF YOU WANT A DOG, GO TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY AND LOOK AT THE OLDER DOGS - THEY NEED A SECOND CHANCE AND HAVE SO MUCH LOVE TO GIVE - AND A GREAT WATCH DOG. THANK YOU PETCO AND HSGC.

ARLETTO HAINER, ALEX AND TAG.

Lucky dog owner...

As a retired used car dealer I had long ago given up expecting a "free lunch" ever. The Garland County Humane Society ad for "free older dogs and cats" plus free food, housing, tags and shots sounded too good to be true. So we took the trek north on Hwy 128 to Ault Loop and came home with Harley, a 50 lb. Lab mix that is the best dog I've ever owned. Well behaved, house broken, calm, laid back and obedient. Not a "runner" or a "digger" or a frequent barker. Just a loving companion. That we have changed his life goes without saying. He was at the Kennel for 8 months. How has he changed our life? He has added structure, exercise and loving companionship to our lives. No longer do I sit in front of the TV hours on end. Any pet requires regular feeding and exercise plus human contact. These requirements are little enough for the love and companionship received. We're thinking of a second adoption. How about you?

A great Buddy!

I just wanted to write and thank you for Buddy! He is such an awesome part of our family! We have grown to love him so much. He is such a great dog — he loves the boys and they love him. Noah, our oldest son loves to play with Buddy and Eli — our youngest loves to sneak food to him at dinner time!

Thank you so much for letting Buddy join our family. We love him so much!

Thank You,
H. Stone

Harley Has a Home!

Thank you so much for our recent addition to our family. Derrick (Tabby cat) was at Petco on Feb 4, 2006 after looking at the animal shelter where no cats were available to be adopted and Guardian Angels, and Paws and Claws we found the cat that fit our family. Derrick has a new name, Harley, and he loves his new home. He has taken over the kids room and loves sleeping with all the kids.

Thank you so much, for allowing us to adopt him. This is our first inside cat and I am so glad that we choose to adopt. Thank you again for the wonderful addition to our family whom we already love dearly, Harley thanks you too for taking care of him till he found home.

T.G.

Gracie's Story

Gracie is a young mother of 5 who lives here in Garland County. Her family abandoned her leaving her and her 5 little ones without a place to live and no food or care. She has struggled as best she can to take care of her family, but with no one to assist caring for her babies as you can guess, she hasn't been successful.

Gracie is a beautiful female but no, she isn't a woman, she is a dog. Yes, she was abandoned, has 5 puppies, and yes, she has begged and scavenged for every meal she's had. Gracie had to find a place where she could have her puppies when her time came, so she found an out-building in someone's field. There, alone and starving, she gave birth and did her best to raise her family.

This was her plight until recently when the Humane Society of Garland County rescued her. With their facility on highway 128 being full to capacity, a member took her home with them. Even though their foster home was full, they made room for 6 more! This is what members, officers, and board members with the HSGC do, they care for unwanted, abandoned and abused animals.

But they cannot do this alone, they need your help. They desperately need foster families for dogs, cats and horses. They need your help volunteering, purchasing food, providing flea and heartworm protection and veterinarian care. If you can see it in your heart to help feed and care for the animals, please make your donations to HSGC, PO Box 1484, Hot Springs, AR 71902. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.

Gracie's story continues with Tyson...

We adopted one of Gracie's son's today at Petco. We named him Tyson and he is very happy with his new family and home. He had no problems adjusting on his first day with us.

He's already been a blessing to our family. My son Max has really bonded with his new son. They will be a blessing to each other because Tyson needed a home and Max needed something to call his own and take care of. Thank you all sooo much.

God Bless you all!
D.L

Gracie's 4 other little ones still need a loving home like Tyson was lucky enough to get. Please call us or email us at info@hsgconline.com for adoption information - Thank You!

Meet Patch and Bandit.

These two beautiful males came to us as puppies about a year ago. Patch and Bandit are brothers and have never been separated.

To separate these two guys would have been a very difficult experience for both of them. So, to their luck, a family in Magnet Cove adopted the pair, and they have a large fenced-in back yard all to themselves.

According to their new owners, "It was difficult to select from so many nice animals, but we really liked these two from the very beginning. It was fascinating to watch them adapt to a new environment. They're practically joined at the hip."

Great dogs! They truly love each other and are extremely affectionate and friendly. Patch and Bandit have had all their shots, been neutered, and are simply in doggie heaven!

Emmitt's Story.

My name is Emmitt and my mom & dad are Brad & Jackie. My mom found my birth mother, my sister and me along side a busy highway when I was about six weeks old. Our former parents had decided one day they didn't want us anymore so they threw us in the ditch and left.

Thankfully, my mom stopped to help us. We were really scared and not sure what was going to happen next. She took us home, fed us and then we had a visit with her doctor.

Some great people adopted my mom and sister and I now live here with my new family and three other very large dogs. My new mom is great but she has a problem, she's a sucker for a guy like me. She's already added three more dogs. I love my new home and being an inside dog. My mom keeps me in the yard when I go outside because she knows it's dangerous around the streets. A car could hit me or someone could be mean to me.

My life is great because I have lots of food and toys to play catch and tug with my dad. I think I know what heaven must be like.

Rascal's Story.

I was born in Clark County and put on the auction block along with several other beagles, before I was a year old.

Just from looking at me, (I am quite handsome), everyone thought I would become a good hunter and most likely grow to fit my large feet. But someone said probably somewhere in my family, who knows where, I have a little Bassett Hound, which would explain my large ears & feet, my short legs, and my not growing any larger. I knew I needed to fit in and hunt with my friends but they just ran off and left me. I ran as fast as I could but I just couldn't keep up.

So one day it was decided I wasn't a hunter and they turned me out of the pen. That was only for working dogs that could earn their keep. When I went out to play, I just loved going to the highway where the large trucks go by. That's when someone called for help and my new mom & dad came to get me.

You wouldn't believe the forever home I have now with my new parents. I also have 3 sisters and 4 brothers who love to play with me. They call me Rascal because I get into lots of stuff and, like I said, I'm kind of handsome.
